iPhone5 - Black screen after swap, constant "bong" noise.

I had a damaged white iPhone5 Screen, smashed digitizer and all.

Swapped in a black screen kit ordered off of iFixIt, actually had the screen light on the first try but with odd repetitive blocks along the top. Also the front camera was not sitting right, so I pulled it off, put it back together, and now there's no screen.

Power and Mute buttons seem to be unresponsive, it only boots up when connected to the charge cable.

It does seem to reboot with the Home+Power button.

Odd thing is, when it does boot it makes a repetitive "bong" noise every two seconds, if connected to the charge cable while muted it gives a double vibe every two seconds.

I tried power cycling the battery a couple times, and that did nothing. I can't swap the old screen back in the digitizer disintegrated as I pulled it off. Any help will be appreciated!

"It only boots up when connected to the charge cable" is key.

This means that your battery is not connected--which may explain most of your other problems. Hopefully, you just need to reseat the battery, but it is very common to actually tear a solder connection of the battery connector to the motherboard---can be repaired, but you may wish to seek a professional.

The dark LCD is most likely not connected properly, or the connector is damaged. Take a look carefully at the connector under magnification, clean the connector, and try again. The original problem (blocks at top) is also caused by a connector misfit.

You can try connecting the old screen lcd only and not worrying about the digitizer.

Good luck

Jessa

My daughter dropped her iPhone 5c now it won't turn on and when on charge it vibrates then constantly make a beeping noise every couple of seconds also my older daughter got an upgrade from her iPhone 6s she backed everything up now when u put it on to charge the apple comes up and the line but it only moves a tiny bit along the line then stops and won't come on

You probably connected the new screen with the phone still powered up. Disconnect then reconnect the battery and try again.

Hey Jacob,

First of all calm down as this is not a serious issue as the bong bong might sound really alerting. I was afraid too, but as I said this is just the LCD issue. In my case, I noticed the LCD that was driving the iPhone crazy (bong bong noise) has bad connectors, 2 of the little things was gone. So make sure you have connected it with care to the board. And never plug them with 'whatever, it will fit into its place' attitude. That was how I ended up with that bad connector!

Good luck :)

Hope this helps you.

I had the same problem on My iPhone 5s and as it is jailbroken I could do a little bit of investigation. Here is what I have found:

I power on the iPhone, bong bong noise comes. I go to the CrashReporter folder and there are a lot of log files. In one of those log files, I saw the following:

Jul 12 03:45:43 SpringBoard[210] <Error>: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'cannot hide defunct contexts without a mainWindow -> screen=1 (connected=0) requester=defunctScreen'

  • First throw call stack:

Apparently, as indicated earlier, the issue is that there are no screens attached.

I hope this helped you! :)

Yes! It is a hardware defect. Fixed my screen and everything works as it should. If you have your screen repaired by a non authorised repairer, make sure you test both cameras, speaker, light / proximity sensor and hardware buttons. In my case, the repairer explained that one of my screen connector pins was damaged which ultimately lead to problems associated with hardware that's on surface (buttons, camera, speaker/s, sensor/s.

I had this same exact problem on my 4s and found the solution was that the replacement LED was not compatible with my older iOS (video solution found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOr-bHnu0...). Once I upgraded to the newest iOS (through iTunes since I obviously couldn't do this directly from my phone), the new LCD started working. Obviously, your situation is different since you're on the iPhone 5, but maybe worth a shot.

Hello I had the same problem, I replaced the battery put it all back together.

The result is a black screen and an beep while charging every 2 seconds.

So how I can check the connection cables to reduce the points off failure?

In my opinion the best way is to oder a new display unit and try it again

Any other meanings?

Kind regards

if it is not possible to reset your phone via standby-Button and Home-Button you can disconnect the battery-connector for a few seconds. This helped me.

I had exactly the same problem. I tried three different screens/lcd and none of them worked. I saw the answer from Bob who worked and unfortunately putting the phone into recovery mode and doing a restore is not necessarily and option. I would have to know the persons id and password. Should I be acquiring their credentials?

In our case the phone would just make a dink sound every few seconds and would never boot up. Holding the power and home buttons did nothing to resolve the problem.

We were able to acquire a replacement phone but never found the cause of the problem.

If did read through some forums and found where one guy retried the old screen and the phone came on and then was able to connect the new screen and it worked and seemed to solve the problem.

Share if you have had the same problem.

If you have a phone that is recognized by iTunes = therefore is powering on, but shows no display and multiple screens don't solve then it always either 1.) blown backlight filter (common on refurbished LCD screens that have lost the tape that covers the tiny backlight flex solder joints--these can ground out the backlight circuit and damage the filter. or 2.) Damage to a pin of the LCD connector itself. Pull the black sticker from the socket connection area and have a sharp look. Post a picture and we may be able to help you differentiate 1 from 2. Either way, this defect can be repaired with micro soldering.

Ok my screen got broke... (dropped stepped on) was able to hold phone button and call my girlfriend and was able to carry a conversation forced shut down and waiting for new screen... now i tried it to make an important phone call but turning it on it only buzzes 2 times every 2 seconds and a short buzz in between the 2 buzzes, will this happen because of the screen because it worked fine before i forced shut down

also was able to successfully restore phone to default factory setting through itunes and can see the phone when its plugged into my computer through itunes......

is it possible something else went bad or is this buzzing just from having the lcd and digitizer disconnected?

Hey guys

i'm using iphone 6 on ios 8.4

for weeks, my screen has been smashed as I'm waiting for the repair guy to come back from holidays.

Over the last few days the screen started behaving oddly. Would become non responsive and only worked if phone was locked and unlocked again (restarting springboard in jibber jabber lingo)

Tonight the screen went completely dark while i was using the phone and would not come back to life. Lights there but no ones home.

Tried forced recovery, nothing. screen totally blank except for tell tale sign of light in form of a very faint shadow.

so i connect to itunes via usb. Screen still blank but windows 7 recognized the device and started itunes. As soon as itunes started, the phone started emitting the iconic "bong" noise every 2 seconds.

No screen, the mute button does't make the phone vibrate when switched on but the phone then starts 2 short vibrations every couple of seconds.

Which leads me to this google search result and ultimately here.

I really think its your screen. My phone has no reason to behave like this except for the totally smashed and barely usable screen. I think some connector of mine is damaged and in your case simply (hopefully) not plugged in right.

Will be replacing my screen in next 48hrs and see if that's all it is. Apples way of letting you know the digitizer and/or lcd is gooooone. :(

I had the same problem. I replaced the screen on my daughter's phone. It would not power up but when I plugged it in, the bong noise came on regularly, and I still had a black screen. It was late so I went to bed. In the morning I put the two bottom set screws in and tried to power up again. Now I got the cable image, meaning the phone battery was dead and needed to be charged. I charged it and it all works.

This leads me to two ideas. The bottom screws must both be in and must be contacting something to indicate to the phone that they are in place. I had only put one screw in the night before because I could only find one. I found the other when cleaning up before calling it a night. The other idea is that the phone went completely dead and this did some sort of reset.

So now the phone works perfectly, and I hope this helps someone.

Okay, so basically it started off with these white vertical lines running up and down my cracked IPhone 5C, I searched up how to fix it, and so I followed some instructions...I tried to power it on after placing the screen back on and it did not do anything. The screen stayed black, so I decided to charge it. It is continuously making these boing noises as charged. Please help?

I have found this does have something to do with the battery. If you have another battery to swap out I would try that.

Also try disconnecting the battery, holding the power button to make sure everything is discharged, disconnect and reconnect all the screen connectors.

After reconnecting the screen then connect the battery and see if that works.

Again, all I can tell you is it does have something to do with the battery. I had it happen with a iPhone 5c and I was able to correct it by doing the above steps.
