Which superdrive to purchase?

Hi,

I have a late 2006 iMac (17" Intel, 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo). It has a Matshita UJ-846 combo drive which has been confirmed dead and requires replacement. I believe that's a Panasonic drive (not a Pioneer). Ifixit.com has 2:

12.7 mm PATA 8x SuperDrive (UJ-85J)

12.7 mm PATA 8x SuperDrive (UJ-875)

What is the difference between the two and which one should I buy? They are both the same price, but one of them is out of stock. Please let me know if any further information regarding my computer model is required in order to appropriately answer this question. Thanks in advance!

To get the correct part, write directly to iFixits parts department and they will direct you as to which on you need. Here's the link: http://www.ifixit.com/Info/contact

There doesn't seem to be much difference, they're different model numbers, but iFixit says both will work with your computer, so it's up to you do decide (one is more costly). Obviously then, if you're in urgent/dire need, then you should get the one that is in stock.

I have the same superdrive model in my 20-inch, late 2006, Intel. 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac that needs to be replaced. It reads DVDs. Reads and burns CDs. But will not burn a DVD. Jason did you replace yours? If so with which model how is it working for you?

Thanks,

Sid

Yes, the issue was resolved. I just purchased whichever one was in stock and installed it myself. Everything works great now.
