Whenever i turn on my mac book air, it starts up all the way until it reaches the apple logo with the spinning gear then it shuts down. What could be the problem?

The problem is software. Just restore it with the Apple OS X restore thumb drive.

Could be a variety of things. Help us help you - the more background we have the more help we can be. Have you tried a single user (shift-boot)? Is the power supply connected? Has it been recently dropped? When was the last time it booted normally, and what did you add/change after that time?) e.g. software update, added RAM or new application.
