Why is my electric starter struggling to crank over?

Replace battery, checked oil level and fuel. It will crank once the key is turned but quickly struggle. If key is held in start mode, starter will eventually turn over once then quickly struggle again. The starter will make a ticking noise and heat up.

Richard, this could be because of a bad solenoid or a bad stator inside the starter. You can either disassemble the starter, check the stator for flat spots and short in the winding, or have someone rebuild it for you or replace it all together. It might help if you tell us the model of your mower as well as the engine model. Hope this helps, good luck.

917.288520 - I'm having the same problem. Experimented by replacing the battery, then replacing the key switch, then replacing the main battery cables.

I seem to be losing voltage over the side terminals at the solenoid.

The reason why an electric starter of a riding mower ( WheelHorse and others) will not engage are:
A - cranking mechanic is stuck / pignon spring if existing broken
As the starter is normally a standard permanent magnet DC motor with carbon brushes:
B - carbon brushes (CB) worn/stuck
C- permanent magnet loose / broken

Prior disassembling the starter to check for B or C mark the relative position of its parts and remove just the non-drive side cover with the CB holders for inspection.

If the magnet is loose/broken mark the visible side, so you can reassemble correctly after cleaning (remove old glue) and reglueing (I used Loctite 548)

Try first to reassemble without glue and prepare two spacerbars to put in between the two magnets to keep them at equidistance, as well as a disk to give you the correct axial position of the magnet. The broken magnet parts have a huge force and tend to missalign as long as the new glue has not cured.

To reengage the CBcover, keep each CB inside its guide with a bended to fit wire/sheetmetal C clamp that you will remove once you positioned the collector between the CBs during reassembly.

Great answer - except you missed the question. The starter is struggling, meaning it is engaged.

Besides, it is an old post.
