Why is only one ram slot recognizing?

This is a recent problem. The PowerBook has been reading 2-1gig cards fine, then locked up, required me to restart, and was the dickens to get going again. Now it only recognizes the lower slot, regardless of which card I place in it (so both cards must be good).

This is a well known problem with the PowerBook 15" alu 1.5ghz. Many units developed a failing lower ram slot. Apple responded to the issue by offering a special logic board replacement program but it ended a couple years ago. There's nothing to do to repair the logic board. Put a 1 Gb ram stick in the upper slot and live with it or buy a working logic board. Sorry...
