How do I get the data off the harddrive w/o power?

Will you recycle my laptop after the data is removed?

I only can answer the data question

you can use a external hard disk case or photo tank to plug the ide drive to a usb port.

i use an usb adaptor set for my data stuff - i can connect almost all types of harddisks to my system

photo tank?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

yes photo tank - search for IAMOLED Photo Tank

it's nothing special, some are quite simple and are only to copy the pictures from the sd or cf card to the hdd - but the have an usb connector and you can use them as a external hdd.

the casings are pretty cheap and become very handy in those cases

Here's an adapter that works for me: http://eshop.macsales.com

Then I use a program called SuperDuper to copy the drive:
