Confused: which hard drive?

My hard drive has died - Seagate ST3500418ASQ.

I see many 3.5" sata drives for sale but does it have to be a Seagate? Does it have to be 7200 rpm? SATA I, II, III, 600???

Do they vary in physical size?

Perfectly competent to do the install but just don't know which drive to buy. Please help!

I'm in the UK, according to Seagate the replacement is ST500DM002: will this do the job?

It's on OWCs list of acceptable drives.

Just a follow-up on this that I should have posted long ago: I bought one of the recommended drives but had problems with the fan running at full pelt. I installed SSD Fan Control which sorted the problem.

The 2009 has an Apple priority heat sensor. DO NOT get an off the shelve drive. Here are some drives that will work for you: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-driv...
