The Samsung Galaxy S3 is a multi-touch, slate-format smartphone with eye-tracking ability, increased storage, and a wireless charging option.

How to remove and replace charging port

I've seen the video and the teardown instructions. Unfortunately, they don't address the removal of the charging port from the board and replacement.I've purchased the replacement part, but the one in place does not move even when I apply force.

Has anyone done this? What is the trick?

Thank you. Bill E.

Did you try to unsolder it?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

No. It appears to be press fit. Is it soldered?

Did you get an answer - my USB port appears broken so it looks like a motherboard replacement unless you had some success?

I have a galaxy s3 charging port is broke how to change usb out

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Because I'm afraid I will brake it if I dnt do it right how hot does solder have to be to brake the solder on usb charging port

I believe you have to use a heat gun solder thingy to take it off.

I would like to know about this replacement as well. It looks as if the four "mounting tabs" on the USB port are also soldered to the board. Can anyone confirm?

Here's another video for replacing the charging port:

All you need to use is a heat gun or even hair dryer, it'll take a bit longer by using the hair dryer, but it's possible. Whatever you do, DO NOT force the charging port off. After heating it properly, it will easily come off, just be patient.

After watching countless videos and unsoldering, I believe that the four tabs are indeed soldered. Maybe. The factory appeared to use something other than solder but it responded quickly to a heat gun (time will tell if I accidentally damaged the board because my heat gun is rather large), and popped right off. The trickier part is soldering each individual wire back into place. My soldering iron at work is rather small as we use it on automotive circuitboard prototypes and even that was rather cumbersome to work with. These wires are so close together...

There is a newer method using a hot air system and a small stencil that stays on the board. The method is pretty simple and as demonstrated at the wireless show in vegas las year:

How is this a New Methode? U use flux soder and litze After platine the Part. The stencil is realy unnecesery and for a guy without a hotair Station completly useless

The trick to charging ports that have to be resoldered is that you have to be very gentle and very patient. I have had success with my reworking stations heat gun and very small tweezers. The key is to make sure that you heat everything involved thoroughly so that you don't pull up the traces for the contacts. I am pretty sure that if it doesn't work when you get the new one in place you have damaged one of the traces. The only thing I can recommend is to practice as much as possible with your soldering iron and get very comfortable with it. This will give you a "sixth sense" on when you can start separating the minuscule contacts from the traces. I know this isn't a YouTube video, but I hope it helps you to be more confident over time.

If you got the port on a piece of "flex" then you can do like this and change the whole thing, takes 10 min and is super easy:

It can ve done very simple with an good Iron, no need of Hot air. Just use Flux and good soder (leaded)

The hot air is easier and less dangerous normally. Also this has been solved with multiple answers of the same magnitude
