You have to turn it on to find out what and where the problem is.
Try connecting an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop's HDMI port and check what the display from the laptop is like when viewed on the TV. Don't forget to press the Fn + F8 keys (both together) to switch the display from the laptop screen to the TV.
***''If the display seen on the TV screen is also tearing etc,''*** then there's a motherboard problem and further testing would be required.

***''If the display seen on the TV is OK,''*** switch the display out put back to the laptop and then move the laptop lid very slowly back and forth to see if doing this affects the picture on the laptop screen i.e. stops it tearing, does nothing still the same or makes it worse.

''If it stops the tearing so that there's a good picture or if it makes it worse,'' it may be a damaged video cable where it passes through the hinge to get from the motherboard to the LCD panel.
''If it does nothing'' then most likely it is a faulty LCD panel which will have to be replaced.
