As it's not shut (clam shell mode) the external won't become the primary display. So how is this done is the clue and the answer! The logic board has a Hall sensor which senses the magnetic flux from a magnet which is embedded into the lid. Here's the location on the logic board

Now this is the backside of the logic board pressed into the palm rest just above the ports. So getting a rare earth magnet and placing it over this location will switch the video output to the external as the primary display. Hopefully that fixes your issue.
