There are a lot of possibilities! How full is the drive, have you deleted at least 1/3 of the space so you can run a defragmentation program as given this systems age I'm sure the drive files are very fragmented! The system may need a good clean internally as over time dust and debris buildup which can effect the systems cooling. These are the easy ones!
