Not much you can do for this rodent.
Make sure the battery contacts are clean of any junk and often times they get coated with a thin film of oxide which you can't see. Use a fresh (still soft) pink pencil eraser stick polishing the contacts within the holes and the plate side as well. Some batteries don't make good contact so you may need to try a second set.
Gesture Control Is dependent on a sensor which hugs the curved surface of the top which you can see in Step 9 in the [guide|1240] unless it's damaged in some way there's nothing you can do to fix that.
-As far as the tracking the LED and sensor on the bottom can get dirty enough you'll loose the tracking of the movement as you shift the mouse.
