If you have access to another Mac system I would just create a bootable OS installer USB-C thumb drive with the OS you want to use (what Apple lists as supported) then jus use this drive. It’s quicker and if you have a weak WiFI or internet connection which is likely why you got the error as the system couldn’t sustain the connection.
