It’s likely this SSD is a fixed SATA III (6.0 Gbps) drive  not the needed SATA II (3.0 Gbps) this system requires. While there are Auto sense drives which will drop down it’s I/O speed to match the systems. I don’t believe that’s the case here. So why does it work externally? The SATA to USB case can force the speed as the standard was updated after this system was designed.
