Not exactly, a technician told me I could connect external monitor for iMac with no iMac screen.
I eventually succeeded boot up my A1419 27” iMac 5k (2015 late) with the Apple Thunderbolt display with no display assembly mounted on my iMac
What he said at that time was you can’t use an external monitor using Display port (mDP). It failed with mDP cable to external monitor but when I use Thunderbolt cable to the Apple Thunderbolt Display it works!
Now I'm not sure if a full DP connection will work, but I should probably keep trying.
