I don’t think you messed up part. The first version of the watch used these god awful connectors. Most of the time you do need to try again as the alignment can slip on you.
-The display assembly would be the first part to try replacing, do take note the Apple Pay feature is part of the NFC chip which is mounted on the display so you will need to carefully remove it to mount to the new display.
