Sadly, @mayer they are limited to Thunderbolt 1 or 2 drives DVD, HDD or SSD. I have two RAID cases which I use One is populated with HDD's and the other is with SSD's.
You can also plug in a 27" Thunderbolt display or two, or a miniDisplayPort display or TB/mDP adapter for a VGA display. There were some external GPU units which mostly failed as they just couldn't get the needed I/O throughput they needed.

When Apple moved to the USB-C connection with Thunderbolt3 and now 4 with the newer Mac's TB1/2 systems where leafs in the dust. Even still nothing has really changed.
