***Dedicated GPU MXM boards being discussed:***
* The 2010 iMacs either have an AMD Radeon HD 4670 or Radeon HD 5670
* The 2011 iMacs have either an AMD Radeon HD 6750M or Radeon HD 6770M.

***So what is the deal? There are lots of reports of the boards dyeing!***
***Lets look at this in a different way…*** back in 2009 & 2010 when these systems where being designed what where the types of applications being used? Mostly simpler text type of apps and in the gaming space graphics text blocks were still being used like the original DOOM game, over time better graphics were used with each generation of the game.
-But! the amount of CPU & graphics processing was increasing! So older systems just couldn’t keep up with the added load. Just like pushing anything beyond what it was designed to support something has to give! Thats the core issue here as any iMac can be pushed too hard. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU0L4--Yh28|History of DOOM (1993 - 2020)] So clearly the iMac was not intended to be a serious gamer system. Maybe simple card games and watching video’s was its limit.

***There is still another issue and that is lack of maintenance!*** You change your cars oil out and replace the air filters so your engine lasts. So do you dust out your system cleaning the fan blades and heatsink fins so the required cooling air is able to get through? After five or six years clean off the old thermal paste from the CPU and GPU chips refreshing it with the proper thermal paste and pads?
So between the age of the system and the lack of maintenance these old systems have their limits! So look asa getting your system serviced so its clean and the thermal paste has been refreshed so it is effectively able to cool. And clearly don’t play DOOM games or other heavy graphics stuff as you system is just not able to support them.
-***Last point,*** I strongly recommend you install a good thermal monitoring app like [https://www.tunabellysoftware.com/tgpro/|TG Pro] to help in both monitoring your systems heat but when needed boost its cooling as well when needed!

+So you need to think through how are you planing on using your system, and respects its limitations. And of course take care of it! cleaning it and monitoring its heat levels.
