Remember the USB ports on this system are the older USB 2.1 (480 MBit/s) which uses the larger 4 contacts (two power two data). The USB drives you are using may be the newer USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) which uses the additional six contacts on the other side.

The power services in this series was not very high so high draw devices might not work and you will get an alert if the current draw exceeds what it can offer.
If this is happening with nothing connected, I would check the contacts for damage and your power logic on the logic board may need repairs.
