Apple online chat said ‘take it to an authorized repair’. An hour trip to Ipswich UK to find out they quoted at £600 (roughly $800) to replace the whole display after looking at it for ten seconds.
I wasn’t too pleased with Apple at that moment as they had a screenshot of the problem so could have simply told me that fact.
I don’t think this is good for their customer base and it isn’t good for shareholders either (I happen to be both in this case).

Should be an upgrade path to newer model if they are essentially writing off customers with 1.x year old machines .

I have an old 2007 iMac to use as a screen so at least I can use it in an office until I can find a cheaper solution.
