Sadly, the highest version of OS you can run is OS-X Lion 10.7.5.
Due to the age of the system its very limited. Apple does not offer any security updates for the OS so its risky to use online it’s also so not able to run the newer HTML code most web sites are using today.

You do want to replace the battery if it is unable to hold a charge, iFixit still has a few [product|IF186-009] these olde Li-ION batts are limited to 300 cycles, most don’t even get that far 250 is the best I’ve seen [https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201585|Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks].
