It would help knowing what the OS version you currently have go to the Apple menu and click on '''''About This Mac''''' it will give you all of the info and if you run across the tabs the amount of RAM and how many drives your system has.

Using a USB connected keyboard press hold it as you Re-start your system it should get you into the diagnostics within the newer firmware. Are you able to get that to work? If so, what was the errors it told you.
