If it is out of warranty, you may want to look at the connector where the cable coming from the trackpad and the keyboard connect to the main mother board.

I've seen a few with crud on the keyboard connector, and cleaning (once it also needed reflowing the connections) fixed it.

I may be wrong, but I think Apple is facing an issue with these keyboard and trackpad failures, and requiring Apple service providers to run a diagnostic test on all laptops they receive (regardless of reason they came in for) while the laptop is connected to a server that feeds the info back to Apple.
