I've never heard of a bad HDD causing display issues, but have had broken, pinched cables, bad logic board. bad screen, but not a bad HDD causing it. try the external display & tell me the results

+It sounds like a bad video chip. I’ve had that happen twice and both times it was a bad video chip. I used eBay to find a company that specializes in repairing boards with that problem and both times it worked fine after that.
