Sound through the speakers but there is no HDMI signal

Had problems in the past when turning on the receiver and get garbled sound, but now I'm getting sound through the speakers but lack the HDMI signal to the projector. I've checked all connections and unplugged/plugged each with no positive result. Could this be a follow on problem to that experienced with the garbled sound previously?
