Sadly there is not much you can do here to upgrade this system to run anything newer than 10.7.5 "Lion". The systems CPU support chips limits this system to 32bit (even though the CPU its self is 64bit clean).
The highest version of the 24" models is this one: [http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-3.06-24-inch-aluminum-early-2009-specs.html|iMac 24" 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo (Early 2009)]. While it might be possible to frankenstein your system by swapping out the logic board you're on your own here as I have never seen anyone achieve it.
Remember the system here is limited to 8 GB and only has a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). So I do wonder if its worth all of the effort and risks.

+Sorry if I burst your bubble here ;-{
