Do you have a surge protector or a UPS? Do you have all of the equipment powered via the surge protector/UPS? If not you could have created a back path for the voltage spike to enter into your equipment. For now you'll need to get a access to a second Mac so you can try repairing your external drive. Or, you could setup a UBS Thumb drive and then use it to boot up.
