Often the HD is to far gone to recover anything without major surgery of the HD by a data recovery service which is very expensive and will take some time. Even then the data may not be recoverable or have issues so it can't be used.

I would first bring the system into an Apple Store to see if they will replace the HD for free (they often do within the first year or so). If they don't, lookup the HD on the suppliers web site to see what you'll need to do to get it replaced.

Even if you decide to replace the HD on your own to a bigger HD I would still get this one replaced as you could use it as a backup drive by putting it into an USB exclosure so you won't be caught again.
