Reset the SMC on Mac desktop computers

Follow these steps for iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, and Xserve.

Shut down the Mac.

Unplug the power cord.

Wait 15 seconds.

Plug the power cord back in.

Wait 5 seconds, then press the power button to turn on the Mac.

Any other idea to fix the problem and make the computer turn on again?

Please help.

Mac Pro Late 2013: Removing/deleting the Wi-fi card?

I hate wi-fi radiation. I want to remove, delete and kill the wi-fi card, following your guide. Despite my switching if off in software, the Mac Pro or MAvericks has re-activated Wi-fi 3 times since I got the new Mac Pro (yesterday). So, I am going to kill it in hardware. I now know where to find the wi-fi card ...

Do you think I may have any problems with hardware start-up checks or similar after putting it back together, but with the wi-fi card expunged from the machine?

====================================================

UPDATE 4 Feb 2014

Thanks for the comments:

There are currently more than 34 published academic studies showing that wi-fi destroys or damages genomes / DNA. If you have an ethernet connection, why would you want to radiate your brain and body? Just google: "wi-fi destroys DNA" if interested. Fortunately, Apple has made it quite easy to remove.

For those following the thread ... I purchased a T5 torx screwdriver which is needed for the removal. The process is quite simple:

1. Take off the outer lid of the Mac Pro

2. Remove the round plastic black hat (with a diameter about 120mm) on the top: use a plastic spludgee (or pocket knife if more daring), and shove it up between the Mac Pro body and the black hat, ... the hat is just stuck on with some pressure glue, so work your way around levering it off, and eventually the whole cap just pops off. [ It sticks back on again when you press it down.]

3. Then follow the photos on the site here to remove the Airport card. There are 8 Torx T5 screws to remove, as well as 4 antennae connectors to unplug ... and you are done ... then lift up the card, --> the Airport card is sitting on the underside. Wiggle out the Airport card from its connector on the underside. All done.

Put back together ... Start up Mac and everything works fine ... The Finder Menubar status icons now show:

x -> Bluetooth Not available

x -> Wifi: No hardware installed.

How good is that! Wonderful and delighted!!

I rushed to find a solution for the overheating MP6.1. I have the impression that OCLP, in combination with newer versions of OSX, which are more demanding in terms of system resources (RAM, CPU, etc.), cause older computers to work harder. I started looking for a solution and, using 3D and an additional original fan from the MP6.1, I achieved quite satisfactory results without the noise of an F-35 taking off. To improve airflow, I removed the original bottom cover, and the second fan is powered by a cheap 4-pin PWM controller. I soldered the cables into the fan's test pins and added a PVC mesh filter between the two original MP 6.1 fan diffusers.. At the moment, such a fan can be bought in the UK for £19, which is quite reasonable. If necessary, I also run TG pro on low settings so as not to drown out my thoughts :) I think that the whole thing doesn't look particularly awful and is quite compact compared to other designs 🤔

Mac Pro Late 2013: PCIe Diode temperature - any physical solution?

Hello folks at iFixit,

as seen in my own machine (and researched in many web-discussions), this Mac Pro 6,1 develops great amounts of heat alone from its "PCIe Diode"-Circuit.

As I know you iFixit-people as honest and sincere in researching and adressing repairability-issues, I want to ask especially all of you "trashcan"-users, if anybody of you has found out a way of physically modifiying this specific semiconductor with a heatsink or any other physical workaround - to push it's temperature, which on summer-days easily exceeds the recommended 70 degrees C (a value, which, by its manufacturer, is rated as highest working value).

Up to today, I personally use the software tool "TG pro" to "auto boost" the internal fan to 35% of it`s maximum of 1900 rpm always, when the PCIe diode temp goes over 70 degree C. (To imply this, go to "Auto Boost Rules", add a new rule by pressing "+", select "35" / "PCIs Switch Diode" / 70 C)

But nevertheless - besides these software solutions - hopefully some of you have found effective ways to physically duck the temperature below this critical value (without ramping up the fan...)?

Your experiences are valued! Thank you very much!

Mac Pro Late 2013: Fans on high speed

Hi.

I have a Mac Pro (late 2013) which I need TG Pro (or Macs Fan Control) to control the fan speed. - Without it is constantly high.

I have observed that the sensor for “GPU 2/B Die” is 0/missing in TG Pro and istats menu. I assume that the high fan speed is a precaution by the SMC as it cannot read the temperature.

Do you have any idea on how to fix it? - The GPUs seem otherwise unaffected.

Best,

Mac Pro Late 2013: How do I remove the CPU if the housing for a heatsink screw spins?

Hi! I'm doing a CPU replacement on my Mac Pro 2013. I disassembled down to the part where I start removing heatsinks screws. One of the screws will turn and turn but not come out.

I examined more closely and it looks like the housing for the screw has come loose from the heatsink itself -- so it spins and spins with the screw, instead of releasing the screw as it turns. Does anyone have any experience with something like this? Thinking of getting some crazy glue with a long nozzle and trying to apply some glue to the housing to get it to stick the the heatsink again.

Mac Pro Late 2013: Why are various audio plug-ins disabled after changing I/O board?

Diagnosed a failed I/O board on a late 2013 Mac Pro, preventing machine from powering on - swapped out with known good I/O board, this resolved the issue. While the machine was disassembled I removed the internal drive and looked at the data using an external enclosure, mounting on a separate machine. I work at a repair shop so we did try a few other things before discovering the I/O board issue (swapped power supply and interconnect board).

Once the failed I/O board was discovered to be the cause of the issue, we reassembled the machine with a new I/O board and all of the other original components. It now powers on and boots into the user account successfully. I just found out that all of the users audio plugins for various music editing software are now disabled - they are seeing the machine as an unrecognized/unlicensed machine. Is this something that could be caused by the disassembly and reassembly process I performed? Thanks!

Mac Pro Late 2013: My 2013 Mac Pro won't turn on

I have a 2013 Mac Pro that won't turn on. It started doing unjustified reboots, then it was hard to turn on, it took several minutes to turn on, and now it does not turn on, the power button is the only LED that does not light up, but it seems that it is on because it seems that you can hear the fan spinning. I am going to take it to an Apple technical service for repair, but I would like to know if it is the symptoms of the damaged graphics. Because if so, I will not repair it and sell it for parts.

These symptoms, can they also correspond to the damaged power supply? I have already done everything, in addition, it was once in the technical service when the ignition began to fail, and they did not find anything.
