Filter is Dirty
A dirty or clogged filter can restrict airflow, causing the motor to work harder and overheat, leading to a burning smell. Identify and remove the filter, usually located at the top or back of the vacuum. Wash the filter with mild soap and water (check manufacturer's instructions), or replace it if it's damaged or heavily soiled.
Hose, Wand, Or Attachment is Blocked
Check the hose, wand, and attachments for any blockages that could be restricting airflow.
Clear the clog by removing any debris or obstructions from the hose, wand, or attachments.
Belt is Worn or Damaged
A worn, stretched, or broken belt can cause the vacuum to overheat and smell burnt.
Access the brush roller and examine the belt for signs of wear, stretching, or melting.
If the belt is damaged, replace it with a new one.
Vacuum is Overheating
If the vacuum is overheating, the thermostat might automatically turn it off.
Allow the vacuum to cool. Let the vacuum cool down completely before attempting to use it again. If the overheating issue persists, contact Shark customer service for further assistance.
Motor is Damaged
A failing motor can also cause a burning smell. Access the motor and check for disconnected wires or burned connections. If there is visible damage the motor may need to be replaced.
