Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 Performance Is Slow
The device lags, struggles to open apps, or is overall unresponsive.
Tablet Lags When Opening an App or Unlocking the Device
This could be caused by a few things, primarily other processes taking priority.
- Restart the device:
- Press the power button to turn the device off, and then again to turn it back on.
- If the problem persists, hold the power button until options appear on screen and select “power off” twice.
- Once the device is off, hold the power button again until the device turns on.
- Steps 2 & 3 can also be done by selecting “Restart” if the option is available on your device.
- Check to see what apps are open:
- Tap the button with 3 vertical lines at the bottom-right corner of the screen, or swiping up slowly from the bottom of the screen.
- Close all apps to clear the cache data (removes excessive data usage).
- Check for extra data usage:
- Go to settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits
- Put any unnecessary apps into deep sleep to remove any extra data usage.
- Check cache data:
- Go to settings > Battery and device care > Memory
- Select the “Clean now” option to clear out cache data (temporary memory usage).
- Check storage usage:
- Go to settings > Battery and device care > storage and look at how your storage is being used.
- Delete any unnecessary apps, pictures, or videos to clear memory and improve performance.
The Tablet Won’t Turn On
Sometimes the screen either doesn’t turn on or freezes on a black screen. In this case, a hard reboot will usually solve the problem.
- Press and hold the power button until some options appear on screen, such as “Power off” or “Restart.”
- Select “Restart” (you may need to tap it twice) and wait for the device to complete the process.
- If no change to performance occurs, then instead select "Power off) (again, twice if needed) and wait for the device to power off completely.
- Press and hold the power button until the Samsung logo appears on screen. This is called a “hard reset,” and should improve performance speed.
- Wait until the process is complete and try seeing if your device performance has improved.
Low Battery
Battery life/power can affect device performance.
- Check to see if your cord is broken or old, and replace it as necessary.
- Check the type of cord. It must be a USB-C (Type C) for the device to charge properly.
- If your device uses low-power mode, that can slow the performance. To change that:
- Swipe down from the top of the screen.
- De-select “Power saving” mode. (It’s the battery-shaped icon with a triangle in the center.) Power saving mode saves on battery power, but also slows performance to optimize your battery usage.
Motherboard Failure
If all other options have failed, the problem may likely be the motherboard.
- Save all data onto another storage device and perform a factory reset. This is done by:
- Power off the device completely.
- Hold the power button until “Power off” appears.
- Select “Power off” twice.
- Then, hold the power button and volume up buttons simultaneously until the Android recovery screen appears.
- Use the volume buttons to navigate to “Wipe data/Factory reset” and press the power button to select it.
- Select “yes.”
- Select “reboot system now” to complete the process.
- Power off the device completely.
- If this still doesn’t work, then replace the motherboard.
