Drill Does Not Work When Trigger is Pressed
The drill does not function when the trigger is fully pressed down.
Battery is dead or not attached correctly
Make sure the battery is charged and fully has been inserted into the drill correctly. If not, check the battery for problems.
Blocked Trigger
Make sure that nothing is preventing the trigger from being fully depressed and making contact with the switch assembly. Any debris that is blocking the trigger can be cleaned by removing the housing and using a dry cloth or pressurized air to remove debris.
Sticky Trigger
When pressure is applied on the trigger, and it resists being pressed or becomes stuck, but there is no debris.
Follow these steps:
- Step 1: Spray WD-40 into and around the trigger.
- Step 2: Work with the trigger back and forth.
- Step 3: Let the excess WD-40 drain out.
- Step 4: Test if the trigger is still stuck.
If the drill is on and gets stuck, disconnect the drill from the battery and wait until the battery completely stops moving. Try to apply pressure to the trigger and see if it is still stuck. If stuck, look to see if there is debris in the trigger and remove debris blocking the trigger mechanism. Test again if the trigger is still sticky. If no debris follow the above steps.
If the trigger itself is broken, keep the battery disconnected and go to a specialist to replace the drill or the trigger mechanism.
The Direction Switch Won’t Change Position
When the direction of rotation selector is being toggled, the direction of which way the drill bit is turning does not change
Debris is blocking the switch
When the direction switch is pressed the drill rotation doesn’t change its position. Clean out debris from around the switch.
Manual Fix
- Step 1: Check for debris around the switch.
- Step 2: If debris is found, clean around the switch using a cotton swab.
Broken Direction of Rotation Selector
If the switch is free moving between forward and reverse positions but nonfunctional then the plastic components associated with the selector may be broken and need to be replaced.
Recovery for direction switch Ryobi P214
If cleaning is unsuccessful or the switch is free moving but doesn’t change the drill position, it's time for a replacement. To access the selector and trigger assembly, remove the housing and separate the wiring from the selector and trigger assembly using a soldering iron.
The Battery Doesn't Provide Enough Power
The battery is properly attached but the drill is sluggish or doesn't work, then the power is being reduced.
The battery won’t charge
When the charger is properly connected to a charger, and power levels in the battery won’t increase. It is possible from a corroded battery or an old battery.
To determine if the battery is corroded or old follow these steps:
- Step 1: Check for corrosion on battery terminals.
- Step 2: If corrosion is found on the battery terminals, clean them with a water baking soda solution.
- Step 3: Carefully rub the solution on the battery until corrosion is gone.
- Step 4: If the previous protocol doesn’t work, replace the charger or battery if over three years old.
Charger doesn’t charge the battery
When the charger is connected, the battery’s charge doesn’t increase. If the battery is new or within three years old, check the charger for corrosion.
Manual fix
- Step 1: Check for corrosion on charger terminals.
- Step 2: If corrosion is found on the charger, use a water with baking soda solution to clean.
- Step 3: Carefully rub the solution on the battery until corrosion is gone.
- Step 4: If the previous protocol doesn’t work, replace the charger or battery if over three years old.
Recovery for Ryobi P214
If the cleaning protocol is unsuccessful, the battery or charger may need to be replaced. The drill battery lifespan is on average 3 years, check the age of the battery and replace if required. If the drill battery hasn’t exceeded its lifespan, the charger may be defective. Attempt to charge newer drill batteries, if unsuccessful replace the charger.
Battery's Drill Chuck is Stuck in One Position
The drill will turn on but the chuck is stuck in place and won't turn.
The Drill Chuck is stiff
If the chuck is stuck and doesn't move if you try and twist it clockwise or counter-clockwise Follow these steps:
- Step 1: Put the drill in reverse.
- Step 2: Grab the chuck of the drill with gloves on.
- Step 4: Pull the drill trigger.
- Step 5: Try to turn the chuck quickly until it comes loose.
Recovery for Ryobi P214
If trying to force the chuck doesn't work, or if you break the chuck. Go to a specialist to have it replaced or fixed.
