Background
Notions are the little but essential pieces that make your clothes work, like buttons, snaps, rivets, and drawstrings. Losing a button or snapping a drawstring doesn't have to be the end of your garment. With a little patience and know-how, you can keep your gear for longer.
Zippers are also notions, but they can be a little more complicated to repair. If you need help with a zipper repair, head over to the Patagonia Zippers page.
Snaps
An alternative to zippers, snaps are used to hold two sections of material together, usually on outerwear. Snaps can be made of plastic or metal, and most garments usually contain between 3 and 6 snaps placed along their front. Snap fasteners are also called press studs, poppers, snaps, or stitches.
Snap fasteners include a circular lip under one disc that fits into a groove on the top of the other side of the snap, holding the pieces together until a certain amount of force is applied. Snaps can be attached to fabrics by riveting with a punch and die set specific to the type of snap fasteners used.
Patagonia repair technicians use a bench-mounted hand press to install new snaps, but you can also use a handheld press. We've included guides for both!
