Nespresso Vertuo Next Coffee Tastes “Sour” or “Dirty”

Does brewed coffee from your Nespresso Vertuo Next taste "Sour" or "Dirty" with any flavor of coffee? Use this troubleshooting guide to help diagnose why.

Ensure that within the water tank only water is inside of it. The Nespresso Vertuo Next will not operate when given any liquid that is not water.

To clean your Nespresso Vertuo Next,

Begin by removing the water tank, thoroughly rinse and clean the tank along with its accompanying lid.

1. Fill the water tank with fresh drinking water and replace.

2. Place a 1 liter or larger receptacle beneath the dispensing nozzle, open the machine head and remove any used pod within. During this time remove the trip tray as well and clean out. Replace when done and close the machine head.

 3. Ensure that the machine head is locked with the handle being all the way to the left indicating the head is locked. Once locked the Vertuo Next will begin to heat up. Wait until heating is done (The heating process will take 30 seconds).

4. After heating has been done, press the button three times within 2 seconds to engage the cleaning procedure.

5. During the cleaning process, the Vertuo Next will clean itself for 2 minutes. After which water will begin to pour out from the dispensing nozzle. This process will repeat for 7 minutes. The light on top of the machine head will indicate when the process is done.

(Note this process can be stopped simply by pressing the coffee button once)

1. For descaling, ensure that no strong cleaning agent is used. The descaling process will take approximately 20 minutes and CAN NOT be interrupted. To begin, you will need an empty 1 liter container and one unit of Nespresso Descaling placed below the dispensing nozzle and one unit of Nespresso descaling agent. The machine will notify you when it needs to descale with three blinking lights that alternate between orange and white

2. To begin, start by emptying the drip tray and the capsule container. Then take the 1 unit of descaling solution and pour it into the water tank. Add .5 liters of water to the water tank as well. To ensure optimized heating time, make sure that the head of the Nespresso is closed and locked. Then press the coffee button once and the machine will begin to heat up. You will know that the heating process is done when the coffee button stops blinking.

3. After the heating process is complete, open up the machine and remove the capsule. Close the head once more but don’t lock.

4. To enter into descaling mode hold the button for 7 seconds, after which the coffee button will begin blinking. Move the lever into the lock position and back into the unlocked position. Then hold the coffee button for 7 seconds more. Ensure that the 1 liter EMPTY container is still beneath the dispense spout.

5. To begin the descaling process, lock the machine and press the coffee button once. Liquid should begin dispensing from the spout into the 1 liter container. The first phase of descaling will automatically stop. When the liquid has stopped pouring, remove the water tank and drip tray. Wash the water tank and drip tray, add fresh drinking water to the water tank. Replace the water tank and drip tray and when ready press the button once more. The second phase of descaling will automatically stop when complete. When the coffee button light stops blinking rapidly it will become steady and slow. The descaling procedure is now done.

6. Let the machine dry for 10 minutes, and you are ready to use the machine again.

If descaling the Nespresso machine didn't fix the flavor of your coffee, inspect the pod insert area. Make sure there are no grains left inside of the pod area and in it's surroundings.
