Lenovo Thinkpad P50 is Overheating

If you feel the bottom panel of your Lenovo Thinkpad P50 laptop being abnormally hot or can hear the internal fan making an excessive amount of noise, then you should follow these steps to get things back to normal.

• Keep vents unobstructed: Make sure nothing is blocking the laptop’s vents, including soft surfaces like beds or cushions.
• Use a cooling pad: If your device tends to overheat, a cooling pad can help manage temperature more effectively.
• Stay in a cooler space: Try to avoid using the laptop in hot or poorly ventilated areas.
• Ensure that the fan is free of debris buildup and clean the fan if necessary.

• Tweak power settings: Limit the CPU’s maximum performance or enable throttling to help minimize heat output.
• Dim the display: Lowering screen brightness can reduce both power usage and heat buildup.
• Shut down unused apps: Close background applications that aren't needed to lighten the system load.

Over time dirt or debris can build up in the USB and charging ports of the Thinkpads.

• Use a (properly sized) screwdriver to take off the back panel of the device.
• Then, use a small brush to clear any buildup.
• Once the undercarriage of the device appears to be clear, put the panel back on and see how the device runs now.
