Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 4 Will Not Charge
If your Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 4 is not charging, it can result in deficient performance issues and unexpected device shutdown. Please follow the steps below to get your device back up and running.
It is recommended in the ThinkPad E14 Gen 4 user guide to download the Lenovo Vantage app from the Windows store, enabling you to run a scan on the status of the hardware.
Before opening your Lenovo, first make sure that your device is completely powered off and that your charging cable is disconnected. Make sure there is no electricity actively flowing through the device before servicing it.
Before breaking into your computer, here are a few things you can try to get your device started
Too Many Applications Open
- Having too many active applications or programs running can drain battery life faster.
- Close unnecessary programs or applications running to reduce drain on battery.
Power Settings
- Go to your Settings > System > Power & Battery. Try setting it to the Power Save option to reduce power usage.
- Or you can try right-clicking on the battery icon and selecting "Power Options". You can find more advanced power and battery management options within the Lenovo Vantage application under My Device Settings > Power.
Thermal Modes
- Use Fn+Q to switch between thermal modes, which can affect performance and power consumption
Power Reset
- On the bottom of the laptop, there is a small pinhole, called the emergency reset hole, with a recessed button inside. Using a straightened paperclip, press the button and hold for 10-15 seconds.
If none of these tips help address the issue, try following the troubleshooting steps below to diagnose the problem with your device.
Faulty Battery Connection
It is possible that the problem is a loose battery connector. Open your ThinkPad, locate the battery, and check wires and connections to make sure everything is secure and not physically damaged. If you see any physical damage to wires, connections, or the battery, you will likely need a replacement part to fix the problem. Visit [Insert link for repair guide] to learn how to fix this part of your device.
Faulty USB-C Port
If battery connections are strong and you see no damage to adapter or wiring, but it still isn't charging, the USB-C Port could be to blame. First, using a flashlight to illuminate the port, check for dirt or debris inside the port and clean with canned air or a small brush, if necessary. When inspecting the USB-C port for debris, keep an eye out for bent or damaged pins. If the inside of the port appears to be damaged, a replacement port will be necessary. If there is no damage visible to the inside of the charging port, check to make sure the port is secure and not displaced within the device, and try using a different, compatible charging cable. If it still does not charge, the port is most likely damaged, and a replacement will probably be needed. Visit [Insert link for repair guide] for steps on how to fix this part of your device.
Worn Out Battery
Batteries for this laptop last, on average, 2-4 years, or about 300-500 full charge cycles. If both battery connections and the charging port are functioning without any physical damage visible, check the age of the battery itself. Batteries that are too old will probably need to be replaced. Visit [Insert link for repair guide] for steps on how to replace your Lenovo battery.
