Lenovo IdeaPad 320-15IKB Will Not Charge
This troubleshooting page will help you determine the cause of a Lenovo IdeaPad 320-15IKB that will not charge or only charges a small amount.
Restart your laptop
To restart your computer, you must first unplug your AC adapter and any other cables from the laptop. Ensure that your device still has some battery left over. Press the Windows key and click on the bottom left for the power icon. Select the option to shut down the computer completely. Press and hold down the power button for around 60 seconds to drain any remaining power. Reconnect your AC adapter and turn the laptop back on.
Faulty Charger
If the charger is damaged and not working properly, it is recommended to use a different charger that is compatible with the laptop. To find a compatible charger, you can use the Lenovo Vantage App, go to device settings. Select power, and you will be able to see all aspects of the device's battery. In the dropdown menu, you can select shop batteries and find the recommended charger. If the computer continues not to charge, then the issue is the device itself. Please look over the other sections on this page for other solutions.
Blocked Charging Port
If the charging port is blocked, try cleaning off any debris and dust first. It is recommended to gently use compressed air to clean the port. Avoid using any metal tools, as this could cause damage. If the problem continues to persist, try checking if the port feels loose. If it feels wiggly, the port is detached from the internal board.
Outdated Software
The first thing that should be checked is that your Windows is up to date. Open the start menu and go into settings, click windows update, and download and install any available updates. Follow all the on-screen prompts. Next you can check if there are any Lenovo system updates. To do this go into the start menu, go to all programs, Lenovo, Lenovo System updates. Click the updates tab and select any updates you want to install. Follow all the on-screen prompts and restart the laptop if necessary. Finally using the Lenovo Vantage App, you can check if there are any driver or BIOS updates. Open the app, navigate to the system update section check for any updates and follow all on screen prompts.
Faulty Battery
If there is any swelling of the battery it will need to be replaced immediately. In order to check the battery health, you would need to open the Lenovo Vantage app, then go to device settings. Select power and you will be able to see all aspects of the device battery. The menu will show you your current fully charged capabilities compared to the original battery capacity. If the battery is under 60% of its battery health, then the battery would need to be replaced. The menu also will show you how hot the battery is while in use. The safe temperature range to operate within is about 5 degrees Celsius to 45 degrees Celsius. If your battery is operating at over 45 degrees Celsius with normal use, it will quickly degrade the battery life and should be replaced.
Motherboard Damage
If no LEDs are working when connected to a working charger, there is no display, but fans are running, or USB ports and keyboard are not working it is most likely due to motherboard failure. To determine this first open up the laptop and check for any visible burn marks, swollen capacitors, or if there’s any corrosion, (white/green powdery deposits). If any of these symptoms are true, the motherboard should be replaced. If there is a burning smell the laptop should be shut down immediately and replace the motherboard.
