Lenovo IdeaPad 320-15IKB Overheating
This troubleshooting page will help you determine the cause of your Lenovo IdeaPad 320-15IKB's overheating.
Cooling Fan is Blocked
If the laptop’s temperature is hot to the touch, that could mean that there is not enough air being allowed into the device for the fan to circulate. Try to move your device to a solid surface like a desk and make sure that there are no objects that are right up against the computer. This way, the air is more able to circulate inside the computer to cool it down.
Buildup of Dust
Computers have a fan inside that cools them down when in use. Since the fan is circulating the air outside into the computer, it is normal for dust to get inside the computer. However, a buildup of dust inside the computer, more specifically the fan, may slow down its cooling abilities. To fix this, you must first open the computer and remove the fan. Then you can clean the fan with compressed air to make sure that dust buildup is gone. Then insert the fan back into the computer and close it up.
Running too Many Programs
Computers generate heat when they are running programs, and they can generate too much heat when too many programs are running. To find out which programs are using most of your CPU, you need to open the Task Manager on your computer. To do this press Ctrl + Shift + Esc at the same time. Then you can see the percentage of your CPU that is being used. Look under the Apps section to see which of the programs you are running is using the most CPU and close them. If you are using a search engine like Google Chrome or Firefox, you could also have too many tabs open at the same time. Close some of the tabs you are not using to cool down your computer.
Outdated Software
The first thing that should be checked is that your Windows is up to date. Open the start menu and go into settings, click windows update, and download and install any available updates. Follow all the on-screen prompts. Next you can check if there are any Lenovo system updates. To do this go into the start menu, go to all programs, Lenovo, Lenovo System updates. Click the updates tab and select any updates you want to install. Follow all the on-screen prompts and restart the laptop if necessary. Finally using the Lenovo Vantage App, you can check if there are any driver or BIOS updates. Open the app, navigate to the system update section check for any updates and follow all on screen prompts.
Fan Failure
Computers naturally generate a lot of heat, so they have a fan inside that cools it down. Sometimes the fan itself is not working as it should. While the computer is running, listen for any clicking, grinding, or any noise inside the computer that you don’t recognize even when you have removed all dust inside. If this is the case, it is best to replace the fan inside the computer with a new one. This requires getting the correct fan replacement, opening the laptop, and then replacing the old fan with the new one.
Faulty Battery
If there is any swelling of the battery it will need to be replaced immediately. In order to check the battery health, you would need to open the Lenovo Vantage app, then go to device settings. Select power and you will be able to see all aspects of the device battery. The menu will show you your current fully charged capabilities compared to the original battery capacity. If the battery is under 60% of its battery health, then the battery would need to be replaced. The menu also will show you how hot the battery is while in use. The safe temperature range to operate within is about 5 degrees Celsius to 45 degrees Celsius. If your battery is operating at over 45 degrees Celsius with normal use, it will quickly degrade the battery life and should be replaced.
Motherboard Damage
If no LEDs are working when connected to a working charger, there is no display, but fans are running, or USB ports and keyboard are not working it is most likely due to motherboard failure. To determine this first open up the laptop and check for any visible burn marks, swollen capacitors, or if there’s any corrosion, (white/green powdery deposits). If any of these symptoms are true, the motherboard should be replaced. If there is a burning smell the laptop should be shut down immediately and replace the motherboard.
