Background Information
- Check your Hot Tub's Water Balance: Part of regular hot tub maintenance is maintaining the water balance. High pH or alkalinity levels can cause your water to become cloudy. Regularly check your water's chemical balance when possible.
- Sanitizer is Low: Chlorine, bromine, or other hot tub sanitizers should be regularly added to your hot tub to prevent bacteria from growing inside your tub. Try and use hot tub sanitizer to prevent your water from becoming cloudy.
- Too much Defoamer: While defoamer is great for reducing foam buildup in your hot tub's water, using it too often can cause your water to become cloudy or milky. Try and use a defoamer sparingly if you can help it.
- Overusage of Body Care Products: When you get into your other tub, anything that is on your body can affect the water. This includes lotions, conditioners, oils, even sweat can affect your overall water quality and sanitizer effectiveness. Try and rinse off, or take a quick shower before using your hot tub.
Detergent in Swimsuit too High
Solution: Reduce the amount of detergent used when washing swimsuits
Much like anything that would be on your body, anything that would be on your swimsuit can affect the water. Residual detergent in your swimsuit can create excess foam or impact the pH balance of the spa water resulting in your water becoming cloudy. Be sure you are doing the following with your swimsuit...
- Be sure to wash your swimsuit in fresh cold water before, and after getting into your hot tub.
- Allow your swimsuit to soak for at least 30 minutes in a clean sink to remove residual detergent.
- Treat any stains on your swimsuit with a baking soda paste.
- Be sure to wash your suit with 1 tsp or less of detergent.
- Hang your suit to dry in a cool, well-ventilated place.
Filter Issues
Solution: Replace the filter
Regular cleaning of your hot tub filter is essential to ensure its proper functioning. Filters trap debris, oils, and other contaminants, preventing them from circulating. Over time, filters can become clogged or worn, reducing their effectiveness and leading to cloudy water.
- Maintain your hot tub filters by rinsing them regularly. Typically every 2 to 4 weeks remove the surface debris.
- Perform a deeper cleaning to remove any oils or residues that rinsing cannot remove. Periodically treat them with a filter cleaner every three to four months or during each water change.
- Replace the filters every 6 to 12 months to ensure optimal performance. Regardless of how well you take care of your filter, it does need to be changed annually to keep optimum water quality.
Water is Old
Solution: Change the water
Regardless of how well-maintained your hot tub is, chemical build-up will occur with your hot tub's water. This is often the cause of water becoming cloudy. Unfortunately, the only real way to treat this is to drain the water in your hot tub.
- With regular usage hot tub water can become cloudy. This is caused by body sweat, oils, and other organic matter building up in the water. Try changing out the water to ensure that you have fresh water. It is recommended that you change your water out every three to four months with regular usage.
- Look for any singes of water change. Typically cloudy, foamy, or smelly water should indicate that it is time to change the water.
- Be sure to clean the hot tub's interior surface before refilling. This will ensure that any particles from the old water will not be in the new water.
