HP Probook 640 G4 Overheating
Laptop gets hot when used. Follow these steps to keep laptop running smoothly and safely
Cooling fan is blocked
Make sure the laptop's cooling fan vents on the bottom of the laptop are not obstructed by anything such as clothing or bedding. Place the laptop on a flat, hard surface that allows air to flow freely underneath. If you are using it on a soft surface, move it to a table or consider a laptop stand to improve airflow.
Build up of dust
Over time, dust can build up and clog the cooling fan. Turn off your laptop and use a can of compressed air to blow air into the cooling vents on the bottom of the laptop. Make sure to the hold can upright to avoid liquid spraying. Repeat until dust is no longer coming out and the vents look clear.
Running too many programs
You may be running too many applications at once. To open "Task Manager" press "Ctrl + Shift + Esc" and check to see which programs are using the most CPU and memory. Close out of any tabs, browser windows, and background programs that may be unnecessary.
Outdated software
Make sure you are on the most recent Windows software. A software update can be completed by clicking "Start" then "Settings" then "Windows Update" and make sure you download the most recent update. Make sure to not turn off or sign out of laptop while updates are running. When updates are complete restart the laptop. This will ensure better performance.
Insufficient RAM
If previous steps do not work, you may not have enough RAM for your workload. Check your RAM usage in "Task Manager" then "Performance" then "Memory". If it is maxed out, then see the guide for replacing RAM.
Battery is defective
If previous steps do not work, a worn-out or defective battery can overheat and stress your system. If your laptop seems to be hot near the battery area or is failing to hold a charge, then see guide for replacing battery.
CPU is damaged
If previous steps do not work, the CPU may be damaged. See the guide for replacing CPU. Make sure to follow steps correctly to ensure accuracy.
Replace Cooling Fan
If everything previously stated fails to work, the cooling fan itself could need to be replaced. Make sure to get the correct replacement cooling fan. See the Cooling Fan guide to replace it.
