Does your Dyson DC58 handheld vacuum emit an unusual smell during use? Dyson DC58 vacuums are susceptible to several problems that could cause the vacuum to emit an unusual smell. Check the following possible causes to identify and solve the problem.
Clogged Filter
If an unusual smell is emitted from your Dyson vacuum, it may be due to a clogged filter. As the filter fills with dirt and debris over time, all the built-up debris begins to emit a burnt-smelling odor. Remove the filter by twisting the purple dial labeled “filter” located at the top of the vacuum. Pull the filter out of the vacuum and rinse it under running water for at least two minutes, or until the water runs clear. While rinsing the filter, gently shake it to remove any built-up debris. Gently wring out the filter to remove excess water. Place the filter in a dry, warm environment and allow it to dry for at least 24 hours, or until the filter is completely dry. Then, place the filter back into the vacuum and try to use it normally.
If the filter is too dirty to clean, it may need to be replaced. See the Dyson DC58 Filter Replacement Guide to replace the vacuum filter.
Motor Failure
If your vacuum has a pungent burning smell and also makes a popping noise, a motor failure may be the cause. This will involve replacing the main body of the vacuum, which contains the motor. Use this Dyson DC58 Main Body Replacement Guide to replace the vacuum’s motor.

I had a Dyson DC21 that smelled bad after I tried to wash the tank, twice. It wasn't until I removed the cone at the bottom of the cyclone unit ,that I found the source of the smell. It was a lot of wet dirt. Most people won't do this because you have to pry this piece off and if not careful you can break something.
