- It's important to remove all peripherals from your device. (Keyboards, Monitors, Mice) This helps rule out any foreign issues.
* Your device may lose power or reboot, so save any important data before continuing.
Device Drivers & Firmware
Drivers & firmware downloads require an internet connection.
All modern devices have 'drivers' which essentially tell the electronics on board how to do their job. Outdated or damaged drivers can cause the device to malfunction, causing Windows to crash.
Flashing the Device Firmware (BIOS)
Dell provides a relatively streamlined firmware update system. Download the most recent update from Dell and follow the installation instructions. Your device may cycle power to apply the update, this is normal. Once complete, you may resume normal operation if the issue does not persist.
Dell Driver Updates
Similarly to firmware, Dell has a page dedicated to drivers. Ensure that you allow the web page to scan for devices on your local network. -This is a clever trick Dell uses to get your system specifications, necessary for updating drivers. Download and execute all critical files the webpage displays. If there is more than one update, they may download as a package. Run the software and follow prompts.
Windows Updates
Sometimes, the problem is the drivers may be too new for the version of Windows you're running. To address this Press [Windows Key + R] then type or paste:
ms-settings:windowsupdate
Press [Check for updates]
Windows will then query Microsoft for the most current version of Windows, this may take a few minutes depending on your connection speed. If everything is up to date, you should see two blue arrows and a checkmark. If updates are required, follow the on screen prompts to update Windows.
Corrupt or Damaged Hard Drive
The hard drive may be causing this issue when encountering a corrupt file. This can be addressed by running the 'CHKDSK' command in the command prompt.
- Open the command prompt box by holding down "Windows key + R", and typing "cmd" into the console that appears.
- Type
chkdskinto the console. Windows will automatically check for damaged files that may cause your system to crash. - Wait for one of the following results.
If there are only damaged files, you may see:
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 5)...
File record segment 12345 is unreadable.
Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.
This is good news! This means there was an error on your disk and Windows automatically corrected it.
If there is damage to the actual hard disk, you may see:
Windows replaced bad clusters in file 3058 of name \Users\Examplepath
Bad sectors detected in the volume bitmap.
The disk does not have enough space to replace bad clusters.
Replacement is required, the disk has physical damage that cannot be repaired through reformatting.
If there is severe corruption or drive failure you may see:
An unspecified error occurred (766f6c756d652e63 3f1).
The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.
Cannot continue in read-only mode.
This indicates the data on the hard drive is too damaged to repair. It will require reformatting or replacement.
Even if the command solves issues temporarily, the hard drive may need replacement if you find yourself needing to run 'chkdsk' periodically.
Memory Fault
This issue may present itself especially after the laptop has been dropped or excessive force has been applied. The issue may still present itself through normal usage.
Memory is the short term storage on your device. If it's malfunctioning, to a computer- its like walking into a room and forgetting why you're there.
Memory Diagnostic
On the main circuit board, there are several diagnostic processes which may help you identify if your memory is compromised. You can access them by restarting your laptop, and repeatedly pressing "F12" as it is turning on. You should see a menu, press "Diagnostics" and allow the scan to run. If there is a
It may be required to reseat the memory due to it shifting and compromising the connection with the main board. Follow this guide for instructions.
If you are uncomfortable with working hands-on with your device, a reputable device repair shop may be able to help you.
If there is a "memory-test error" after you reseat the memory, it may require replacement.
Compromised Cooling System
Overheating can severely compromise the CPU, causing it to slow down or crash. It's important to make sure the cooling system can pass air freely.
- Make sure the system fan is spinning when the device is operating. You may hear a quiet hum, or a feel subtle vibration coming from your device.
- If the fan is not spinning, it may require replacement.
- Visually ensure there is no dust blocking the vent under the screen.
- If there is a substantial amount of dust, the device may need to be opened an thoroughly cleaned.
