CAT S22 Flip Screen Flickering and then Becoming Unresponsive
The screen starts having visual artifacts such as white lines, still frames, or black screens, which persist after interacting with buttons or the touch screen.
Software Failure/OS Fault
Software or OS failure can be the cause of a multitude of problems within the phone. To check if the phone software or OS is the issue, start by hard resetting the phone.
- Disconnect the device from any charger or connections.
- Turn off the device.
- Unscrew the back screw.
- Remove the back panel.
- Disconnect the battery.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain the phone
- Reinsert and secure the battery, back panel, and screw.
- Hold down the power button.
If this does not stop the screen flickering, in some cases, putting the phone in Android’s Safe Mode may help identify if it is a 3rd party application causing the problem.
- Turn off the phone.
- Hold down the power button.
- When the first logo appears, hold down the volume down logo.
If safe mode appears in the corner of the screen and flickering has ceased, then this is most likely a software problem. While in Android’s Safe Mode, further troubleshooting can identify the exact cause.
- Delete suspicious or recently downloaded apps.
- Check for system updates.
- Factory reset the phone through settings.
- NOTE: Factory resert deletes all files. Back up any wanted files to another device before the factory reset.
Hinge Connection has been Disconnected or Damaged
If the phone has been used frequently or dropped recently, there is a possibility that the hinge connecting the motherboard to the daughterboard is the issue.
- While powered on, open the phone 15 degrees. In small increments slowly open the phone.
- Apply pressure on the hinge.
If the screen appearance changes while rotating or applying pressure to the hinge, this is most likely a hinge connection issue.
Touch Screen Ribbon Cable is Damaged, Disconnected, or Loose
Sometimes through handling, the touch screen may lose connection from the daughterboard.
- Check to make sure the backscreen remains active. If the touch screen ribbon is the problem, it should not affect the back screen.
- Apply pressure to different places on the screen. If the phone changes screen state, then the problem is either the screen itself or the ribbon
Remove the daughterboard. Resecure the connection between the daughterboard, the touch screen cable, and the touch screen. If this does not fix the problem, replace the touch screen ribbon.
Touch Screen Damage
If it has been confirmed not to be the touch screen ribbon, damage to the screen itself could be the issue. A damaged touch screen may not be able to properly interact with the daughterboard.
- Run a microfiber cloth or piece of fabric across the screen to check for any cracks or protrusions on the screen.
If there is any major cracks or protrusions, replace the screen following [this guide]
Daughterboard Failure
If all other causes have been eliminated. It is most likely either the motherboard or the daughterboard.
If it is only the daughterboard that is damaged, the phone should still be able to receive incoming calls.
- Use a secondary device to call the associated phone number
- Feel if the device vibrates from the incoming call. If it does, replace the daughter board.
Alternatively, if you don't have access to a secondary device with a calling function, you can check to see if the motherboard is still functional.
- Press the power button and volume button at the same time.
- Use the down and left arrow buttons once.
- Press the center button between the directional buttons.
- Press a number button.
- If the phone makes the dial noise, which sounds like a bird chirp, then the motherboard is still functional. Replace the daughter board.
Motherboard Failure
If all other possible causes have been eliminated.
- Replace the motherboard.
