it only works when I take the blower motor out, after which I turn it on and the fan starts spinning. I turn it back off...

I had this issue and from what I understand from my own research on these cars is that’s a common problem, replace the valve cover gasket and grommets. Sometimes the boots need to be re-seated but not always but I was able to just replace the valve cover gasket and my issue stopped.
