MacBook would not boot. had a hard crash. couldn't boot from network or use as target mode.

repair was straight forward: remove old hard drive, install new one. Sit back and wait as it installs, not one, but 3 major OS upgrades. It was worth the wait. Like a new computer. Data loss from the old hard drive was near 100%. Something was majorly corrupted; tech tools couldn't open it and the combo would crash my mini M1.

Be prepared for long waits while updating.

And, if two factor authentication is involved with your iCloud login, you type the code in at the end of your password (old OS won't give you a spot for the 6 digit code) This step stumped me for a bit.
