Push and hold the sleep/wake button and the volume down button (the – button) at the same time, and do this for exactly 10 seconds.

After the 10 seconds, release the sleep/wake button, but continue to hold the volume down button for another 10 seconds. Pay attention! Unlike recovery mode where you get to see the message ‘Connected to iTunes’, the screen will remain black in DFU mode.

Turn on iTunes. You should get a message stating: ‘iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes’.
