Tinning the Tip

After cleaning off buildup with your brass or damp cellulose sponge, immediately feed some fresh rosin-core solder onto the entire working surface of the tip.
If the tip is clean and hot, solder should readily wet (melt and flow onto) the tip.
Coating the working area of a tip in a layer of solder is called "tinning."
