Lift the right side of the battery

Don't try to remove the battery all the way yet. The left side is still adhered to the midframe.
Grab and lift the right pull tab to remove the right side of the battery from its recess.
If you're having trouble lifting the battery out of its recess, apply a heated iOpener to the screen side for two minutes to loosen the battery adhesive.
A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may also be used, but be careful not to overheat the device.
Only apply heat to the screen side to prevent the battery from overheating.
