| - | [* black] The negative end of each AA battery presses against a spring-loaded battery post. Each battery post must move freely. If the brittle white battery leakage residue prevents this, carefully scrape it off of the flats and curved sides of these contacts. Scrape off as much as you can see inside the battery compartment. |
| - | [* black] You will probably also need to scrape the brittle white reside off of the other ends of these posts, next to the fragile ribbon cable. Carefully open the mouse "jaws." Continue scraping until the posts are completely clear. If the springs fail to push the posts all the way in, apply pressure to push each post all the way in. |
| - | [* black] Once a post is pushed all the way in, go back to the battery compartment and scrape off any of the white reside that has become exposed. |
