Introduction
All of the steps after 7 are totally unnecessary. From that point you can detach the screen cable and install a new screen/digitizer unit.

The actual screen cannot be detached from the front cover (digitizer), so if its the cover that is broken, an entire new module will be needed. This will basically be a complete tear down of the phone, as most pieces will be removed to reach the screen.
